10 Countries With The Highest NRI Populations Across The World

NRIs, otherwise known as Yash Raj’s primary TG are fairly self-explanatory. They’re non-residential Indians who do not reside in India.
Now that that definition has been deeply ingrained in our minds, we can move on. India has the highest number of residents who live outside the country in 2018, which really begs the question, where are they?

1.Saudi Arabia

Forming the biggest expatriate community in Saudi, NRIs number at around 4.1 million. They make up approximately 9.8 percent of the country’s population.

The number of Indians in the country is indeed so high, that there are television soaps that consider them to be their target audience.

2.Nepal

Weird enough, Nepal has the highest number of non-residential Indians in the world. A total of over 4 million NRIs reside in the country.

They comprise a whopping 14.7 percent of Nepal’s total population. Also known as Indian Gorkhas, the number of Indian migrants significantly increased after the 1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship.

3.USA

Making up around 1% of USA’s population, NRIs are one of the most prominent minorities in the country. Numbering at approximately 3.1 -3.5 million, they’re a big market for Indian goods abroad.

4.U.A.E

Post independence, many Indians migrated to Gulf nations in order to find gainful employment. The Indian population there is concentrated in the three main Emirates – Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.

They number at approximately 3 to 3.5 million.

5.Malaysia

Ranging from different social and religious backgrounds, there are an estimated 2 – 2.4 million NRIs currently residing in Malaysia.

Many Indians migrated to Malaysia as plantation workers during the British rule. Many of them are Tamil speaking and about 88% identify as Hindus.

6.United Kingdom

The UK has the highest concentration of NRIs in Europe. Punjabi is also considered to be the second most widely spoken language in the country.

About 1.4 million NRIs currently reside in the UK with them gaining increasing respect and inclusivity over the years.

7.South Africa

Numbering at around 1.2 to 1.3 million, many of the Indian residents in South Africa have descended from indentured labourers who were initially brought there by the British. The city of Durban even holds the unofficial title for the largest Indian city outside of India.

8.Canada

A Punjab away from Punjab, Canada has recently increased its efforts in welcoming diverse ethnic groups. NRIs make up over 3% of the Canadian population at about 1.3 million.

The Greater Toronto Area contains the second largest number of Indians in Northern America.

9.Myanmar

A major influx of Indians in previous decades has led to Myanmar’s NRI population numbering as high as 1 million.

10.Mauritius

Indo – Mauritians form a whopping 68% of the country’s population, many of them having migrated there during the British reign. At just under a million, NRIs form a large market in Mauritius.
